Back to the Campground
A quick stop in town to get a few things and we’re on our way to the campground for some dinner! First things first, time for a cold beverage. We like to cook on the fire (as long as there isn’t a fire ban) so the next task is getting the fire going. OK, fires going and dinner is cooking, time for another cold beverage.
Others in Alpine’s campground are throwing a football or a Frisbee around, while some just sit and enjoy the evening, sharing stories about their day. The others rafters from our group earlier in the day come by and ask if they can join us. “Sure” we say, “come on over!”
We recall the adventure we had earlier in the day, we relive the excitement of the Kicking Horse River. We watch as the sun dips behind the mountain and although the campground is filling up, there are still some late comers looking for a spot. Setting up with the help of headlights and flashlights they soon too have a fire going are relaxing under the stars.
As everyone settles into the night, some of us are talking about our trip, while others are playing guitars and singing away into the night. The campground is filled with laughter, guitars and the sound of campfires crackling into the sky. We know we should get some rest, but we are still so full of energy and excitement.
The later it gets, the campfires get smaller and smaller, the laughter and singing gets quieter and eventually stops. Sleep comes fast for us after the day we had, but those that haven’t gone down the river yet are anxiously trying to get to sleep.
The morning sun comes way too soon! We emerge out into the crisp morning air to take in all nature has to give us! This is the best way to wake up, surrounded by nature, the sound of birds singing and the river nearby! Some campers have already left for town to start their adventure on the river, while the rest of us are in no rush to do anything but get the coffee going!
By my second cup of coffee, breakfast is almost done we decide to eat at the edge of the river. We finish eating as we see the first of a long line of red rafts coming around the corner… 6… 7… 8… 9… 10… looks like a big group today! 13… 14…15… rafts! WOW! Some people wave as others are in awe of the beautiful scenery that surrounds them. We could sit here all day, but we know it’s time to pack up and get going.
With everything loaded up we take one last walk around the camp site to make sure nothing is left behind. Sadly we leave the campground but we will be back. As we drive home, we are already planning our next trip!
